Getaway Anew – St. Paul, Virginia

When you hear “St. Paul,” most think of Minnesota. I’ve only spent a day in St. Paul, Minnesota, and it seemed nice enough; however, if you are looking for something different than any other tourist-type mini-vacation, I would highly recommend visiting St. Paul, Virginia.

Now, going there is like going back in time. Situated in the southwest part of Virginia, it is located just about 25 miles or so east of Bristol, Tennesse. We arrived at our hotel destination, the Western Front Hotel, and was immediately met with small town friendliness and charm — and that never wavered regardless of where we went and what we did the entire 3 days there.

If you go there, you need to be ready to slow down some and be prepared to actually talk with people–because the locals will talk to you, and they are not about just taking your money … they want you to have a nice visit. It is hard to describe this feeling-of-difference unless you go for yourself.

On Saturday, we did the Farmer’s Market in the morning. Although it wasn’t much to see/do, I couldn’t help but to notice how nice every vendor was, and the event even gave each kid $5 to spend at the vendor booths however they might like. I got to try rhubarb again — something I did when I was a kid in Indiana … brought back simple childhood days.

Later on in the afternoon, we went tubing down the Clinch River — a 2.5 hour lazy river ride that was extremely enjoyable even though the water level was very low.

To wrap up the evening, we went to St. Paul’s cinema where they were offering a free movie for all to see — just a wonderful way to give back to their locals and visitors. How long ago did you see ET?

On Sunday, we did something brand new to all of us — ATVing in the southwest mountains — if you’ve never done it, I would highly recommend doing so. How can it be easy to do? Do what we accidentally found–stay at the Western Front Hotel and make a reservation with their ATV/hotel package.

What is this article all about? It is essentially just saying that if you duplicate what we did over a 3-day weekend, you will have a good time while meeting some very nice people. And, to top it all off, there wasn’t a restaurant that we went to that wasn’t very good and served food at a good price.

So, if you want to do something where you’re not standing in long lines … not paying high prices … not having to deal with business-only people … then consider going to St. Paul, Virginia, and see things for yourself.
