Yoga Yoga …

This month I will be trying out yoga for weight loss. You may ask, “Why yoga? It isn’t very hard and I doubt you will lose weight doing yoga.” Well, the answer is two-fold: 1) I’m a very stiff guy and before I look to get into tougher workouts, I would like to loosen up some and 2) Research shows that there are weight-loss benefits with doing yoga — I want to see for myself.

This is NOT me!

Now, I have done yoga before — a long time ago. Honestly, in both situations I was the only man in the class and I couldn’t help but to think they (the other gender) were thinking, “what is that dirty ole man doing in this class?” I must confess, there are yoga positions that make any man take a look — if any man says otherwise, I don’t believe him; but, in my case, I was spending so much time trying to configure my body to do what the instructor was asking, and enduring the awkwardness/pain I was encountering, that I didn’t think of much other than surviving through the class and keep any dignity I had left.

According to Healthline, “a review of studies from 2013 found that yoga is a promising way to help with behavioral change, weight loss, and maintenance by burning calories, heightening mindfulness, and reducing stress. These factors may help you to reduce food intake and become aware of the effects of overeating.”

The reason for the name, Results About Me, is to change my lifestyle in such a positive way as to lose weight … but, it has to be sustainable as well … yoga seems to be worth trying … maybe you’d like to try it oo. But, I will do so with today’s numerous youtube yoga sessions out there and do it on my own solo, in my own time, and in my own way. I will, however, combine it with previous types of workouts (walking, biking, etc).

If you’re like me, a beginner, you need to start slowly and gradually build up your stamina. Again, according to Healthline, this allows one to build up their strength and flexibility and prevent injuries. My goal is to do at least 20 minutes of yoga, three times per week, after a walk/bike ride … let’s see what happens.

Who has experience with yoga? Suggestions/recommendations?

Guess what I tried out today at the RDV Complex?!! A Yoga class!! I could hardly believe that you tried it too. I thought I could stand to be more flexible, so as to lessen the chance of hurting myself. If it can help with loosing weight too, that will be great!

Keep those workouts going! There is plenty of time to make your goals — and yoga might just work for you in combination with other things. Good luck!
